ALBUM REVIEW "Only Come Out At Night "
Imagine it’s 1987, sat in a smoky bar, low lighting, surrounded by odd looking punk and rockers, everyone minding their own business over a cooling beverage when suddenly, the door flies off it’s hinges, and a lingering silhouette of a man appears before stepping into the room. It’s Sylvester Stallone, and upon entering the bar, the jukebox kicks into play and Chris Laney’s second album, Only Come Out At Night is blasting out as the bar turns into one cheesy, bloodless punch up.
This is pretty much the underlying tone throughout this album right from the word go. An absolute must for all Kiss, ACDC and Nickleback fans; this is pure 80s from the anthem-esq title track to the ballad Love So Bad. Although the album screams of a previous era, there is not a single track that sounds like another. Oozing with fresh solos and powerful riffs that make you want to pull out that air guitar and sing into your hairbrush.
Each song generally has the same structure which can feel repetitive; intro, verse, bridge, chorus, verse, solo, chorus, end. It’s a simple take on creativity but it does somehow work in an entertaining factor. In short, if you want to be blown away by something new and modern, then avoid this album. If you want easy listening and karaoke style songs, then stick Chris Laney on your wishlist.
Although this is nothing new and in some eyes, could be seen as incredibly dated, Modern Rock does need to remember it’s roots sometimes and if there ever were an album to do this, Only Come Out At Night would be it.
